The water sector is revving up for PR24, the next periodic review. Things are moving on with a fresh Ofwat strategy, COP26 on the horizon, increased urgency in responding to the climate emergency and a regulatory focus on the longer-term.
But the June 2021 Independent Review of Climate Risk was clear: “climate change is here now”. Extreme weather events are increasing in frequency as well as intensity and sea water rises will change the outline of the British Isles. We need to change the balance to focus as much on adaptation as mitigation. And the independent review is clear that the government’s response to the climate emergency is, at best, mixed.
Is it time for the sector to go beyond the reference frame of the UK government and regulators? Is it time to put people first beyond satisfying regulators? There is an urgent need to increase community resilience, to raise public awareness of the challenges we face, to drop the business to business jargon and make climate action an everyday choice for humans in homes and neighbourhoods.
In this session, led by John Drummond, we will also be exploring new approaches to evidence-gathering, engagement and participation, updating our FACE model and exploring how to open-up and power-up companies to harness the hordes of humanity keen to contribute to a sustainable future.
About John Drummond
John previously worked in the water industry at executive level with United Utilities. During his time at Corporate Culture he has been a consultant to Yorkshire Water, Southern Water, Northumbrian Water, Thames Water, Welsh Water, Anglian Water, Scottish Water and Ofwat. And has worked with many organisations across all sectors on strategy, public and employee engagement, together with behaviour change with the likes of Unilever plc, Wates Group, Marshalls plc, Lloyds Banking Group, BT, and EDF Energy.
